A Temporary Permit under Sec. 87 of the MV Act, granted for a limited period not exceeding 4 months, for a specific use such as a seasonal rush, a new service pending regular permit, carriage for a particular purpose, or where a new vehicle has not yet been issued its regular permit.

Policy wording sample"Where the vehicle is operating under a Temporary Permit issued under Section 87 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the use of the vehicle shall be strictly within the purpose and the limited period for which such permit was granted. The policy shall not respond for any loss arising from use beyond such scope."

Verdict

Temporary permits are a common gap area. Verify (i) permit was still valid on DOL (NOT expired beyond 4 months), (ii) use at the time of loss falls within the specific use endorsed, (iii) a new regular permit has not been obtained in the interim that would supersede. Insurers sometimes repudiate when a temporary permit was over-used beyond its narrow scope.
